Composting for Community

Collecting

Food waste is an issue we are all concerned about and, following local research, the church discovered that local businesses and cafés were also troubled by the fact that their only option was to dump their organic waste into landfill. In 2018, we were given grants by Maribyrnong City Council and the Baptist Union of Victoria to purchase a number of composting and collection bins. A team from the church collects from Yarraville cafés and shops twice a week, and we are keeping about 10 tonnes of food waste a year from going into landfill.

Producing

Last year, we also produced around 12,000 litres of fine compost and this supplies our community garden. In June 2019, we turned a barren grassed area outside of 14 High St (our student house) into a series of large raised beds, which together with those behind the church, supply a good supply of fine veggies for our community meals.

Working together

Volunteers are always welcome! If you love stirring compost or pulling up weeds, let us know! We hope to start a small nursery to produce our own seedlings. If you’d like to help, we’d love to hear from you so please get in touch with us.
