A reflection based on 1 Kings 21:1-21 and James 1:12-15. The idea of corrupt power being used to oppress and steal is not an uncommon pattern of human behavior. From corporations, superpowers to local church politics, people have sold out their moral values and bankrupted their souls to simply get what they believe they are entitled to. James tells us that ‘desire’ can give birth to a downward spiral of behavior. This sermon explores why the prophet as God’s representative found this behavior so offensive and for us to reflect on those ways in which our own desires, when unchecked or given enough oxygen, may deliver what we think we need, but actually damage ourselves, others and our community.
